Hi Fresca, I hadn’t looked at it that way before! It didn’t always have a smile – the curving boat at the bottom was added part way through the life of the object.
It appears to be a record of the heavens and the movement of the stars between spring and autumn. The cluster of stars is the pleiades or seven sisters. It’s a unique object, but was found as part of a hoard with swords, axes and armbands.
